Is gaming a sport?

The definition of a sport is: “an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition”
This debate has gone on for a long time; let’s get to the bottom of it.
Gaming is NOT a sport and I’ll tell you why.
Competitive gaming requires a ton of pure skill, but there is very little physical exertion in gaming. Yes, you move your fingers, and you have to sit there for 12-14 hours through a tournament but the players are not athletes and more like individual coaches. A simple miscalculation can screw you royally and cost you the match, gaming is more mental and reflex based than it is physical.
Similar debate: NASCAR is debated because drivers drive in a circle and that’s that. But really NASCAR is considered a sport because there are physical requirements for the pit crew and the endurance of the drivers.
Sports change very little over long periods of time and the rules change ever so slightly every now and then. Video games evolve, look at Fatal1ty; he mastered five games and is the world champion in all five. Three of those games are not played in competitions anymore. Let’s say they come up with a new version of baseball every year, people would have to learn and understand the new rules every time they watch ESPN. The only way gaming would work as a sport is if there was just one game that everyone played and the rules stayed relatively the same.
Related: Poker is on ESPN so it must be a sport. WRONG! What does ESPN stand for? Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. The only reason the WSOP is broadcast on ESPN is because it is fun to watch people lose and win. The player pays $10,000 to have a chance to win $5,000,000 so if they lose they have a hole in their bankroll and if they win that is just as exciting.
It is ok to call gaming an e-sport only because electronic sports are different than the practical “sport.” So the next time you hear someone say that gaming is a sport, slap them in the face and say “How dare you….” It’s simple GAMING IS AN E-SPORT NOT A SPORT.

Best Console for tournament play

What is the best console for tournament play?
It is in the best interest of competitive console gamers to have the right hardware for the job. Every decent gamer in the world is a neighborhood hero, so the real question is, What is the best console for neighborhood heroes to play each other?

Picture of an MLG Event
Now the Average Joe would assume that it depends on the specific game platform, which was true about two years ago. Now more and more games are release on multiple platforms so you really have to decide which platform offers the best competitive experience. For example, Call of Duty 4 was released on the 360, PS3, and PC. Now you have to ask yourself where will the majority of players be? On what platform will the tournaments be on?
You have to look at the online multiplayer experience because if your like 98% of competitive gamers you cannot LAN everyday against some of the best players in the world. Now your probably saying online is so different from LAN, yes it will always be that way but the experience of a player has to start somewhere and more or less your main source of practice / experience is from online play and local tournaments.
So what is the best console for competitive play? Well the majority of console tournaments are played on the 360, and you very rarely see any MAJOR events with PS3s. The 360 offers solid competitive games backed by a truly great online system. The PS3 online system is not as bad as everyone says but Xbox Live is ahead of the rest of the next gen consoles by a 10 fold.
Winner: Xbox 360
PC Skills Vs Console Skills

One of the most arguable discussions in competitive gaming is PC gaming skill vs Console gaming skill. We are going to break it down into sections that will explain why it doesn’t matter.
Response: Lets face it all gamers who play competitively have above average response times. Thus the players really make the difference in response time. Yes, you can move a mouse a lot quicker than a joystick but ultimately the players response time makes or breaks the situation.
Controls: They are different… duh. So who has the upper hand? PCs. They always will until controllers have 83+ buttons. (Hopefully never…) It’s not worth arguing over because almost ALL tournaments scenes make you use a one type of controller / setup.
Now lets get into a few specific genres:
RTS: PCs defiantly have an advantage because of hot keys, key mapping etc. Also moving the mouse corner to corner in a timely fashion has a huge advantage over a console controller. Ultimately it’s the player who has the best strategy who will win.
FPS: It depends on the game. For example imagine a prime player in Quake 3 speeding around the map strafe jumping. A fast paced shooter would not work at all for console tournament play, thats why Unreal series sucks big balls on console and is great on PC. Now if you take a slower paced game like Halo, Rainbow Six, or even Gears of War it would be an even playing field.
If you play competitively at a tournament and some dude bro thinks he is better then all the console gamers because he uses a mouse and keyboard or visa versa. Just know that competitive gaming for PCs and Consoles are two totally separate entity’s, and all competitive players should show respect to anyone who plays at the same level just on a different platforms.
